Optimo sat at the very epicentre of the Scottish Clubbing consciousness in its weekly residency in the Sub Club and is widely regarded as one of the most important and ground-breaking clubs of the past two decades (at one point earning them the prestigious title of Mixmag “Club of the Year”).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp class=\"p1\">Optimo first came to international recognition with the release of How to Kill The Dj (part 2) in 2004. This mix, and the critical acclaim that followed, would catapult the duo onto the international touring circuit.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp class=\"p1\">Subsequent mix releases illustrated their exceptional maverick determination, raising the benchmark for what is expected from a DJ mix and what musical ingredients could be used to create it. These titles include – Psyche-Out (Eskimo Recordings), 20 Years Underground (Soma), Walkabout (Endless Flight), In Order To Edit (R&S), Sleepwalk (Domino Recordings) and culminated with a tour-de-force mix for the Fabric Series with Fabric 52 – Optimo (Espacio).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp class=\"p1\">Optimo (now, JG Wilkes) tours extensively in Europe, UK, North & South America and worldwide. Two most weekends in different spots. Lots of festivals this summer – Rally, Dekmantel Selectors, Love International, Wildeburg, BBK, Houghton, Convenanza…off the top of my head. As well as my residencies in Glasgow and London, my radio show on NTS and everything else in between. Some nice b2b sessions coming up with Prins Thomas, Erol, Hunee, Paula Tape and a few other pals. So pretty busy aye. Just debuted my live show as Naum Gabo (A project I do with James Savage on DFA Records) – that was at Watching Trees Festival which was fun.\u003C\u002Fi>\u003Ci>\u003C\u002Fi>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp class=\"p1\">\u003Ci>I tend to be away every weekend but in the week I have a quiet life – researching music, a bit of studio time, working in the garden and looking after my youngest who’s 8 years old now. \u003C\u002Fi>\u003Ci>\u003C\u002Fi>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp class=\"p1\">\u003Ci>The mix was recorded using 2 Technics SL1210 Mk2 Turntables, 2 CDJ 3000’s and a Pioneer V10 Mixer. It’s a live mix from the closing weekend at the much-loved London venue, Corsica Studios.\u003C\u002Fi>\u003Ci>\u003C\u002Fi>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp class=\"p1\">\u003Ci>On the idea behind the mix, ok, so I was opening the party for Bicep, playing 3 hours before Matt & Andy. (I decided to edit out the first 40 mins or so and not bore you with the whale noises) The recording is straight off the bat – a spontaneous mix of (dirty) vinyl and digital tracks and in truth, really not what I intended to play at all on that occasion. I’d anticipated an extended “warm up” – maybe edging toward 118 bpm or thereabouts before Bicep came on but after an hour or so it was clear I needed to completely rethink as the room was so packed and the atmosphere was just too wild not to let loose a bit. I haven’t listened back to this mix much at all really, not in any detail. The audio fidelity seemed ok so I’m letting out in the wild and you can make of it what you will…\u003C\u002Fi>\u003Ci>\u003C\u002Fi>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp class=\"p1\">\u003Ci>It was a pretty insane party, a lot of fun and hopefully the recording conveys that.
